Tongue tie

What is tongue tie?
The lingual frenulum is a normal structure that typically consists of the lining of the mouth and fascial tissue, and it can involve muscle too. It extends from the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth, and should allow normal tongue movement and action. A tongue tie is an overly restrictive lingual frenulum that can impact a baby's ability to feed as efficiently and effectively as possible.

What is tongue tie division?
Tongue tie 'division' may be called 'release', 'cut', 'frenulotomy' or 'frenotomy', and involves surgical release of a restrictive lingual frenulum. This is a relatively common procedure in babies, and I can safely perform this in a home setting. This is a low risk surgical procedure when performed appropriately, and as part of the assessment I will determine if it may be of benefit and identify any contraindications.

Deciding whether to release a tongue tie
Sometimes it is very clear that dividing a baby's lingual frenulum will likely help them to feed more easily, but this is not always the case. In most cases, feeding problems involve several factors that together can affect feeding. As part of the assessment, we can talk through the feeding history and identify any potential contributing factors to any difficulties. It may be appropriate to try other measures before deciding upon a surgical release. I do take cost and practicality into consideration, but there are occasions when it is necessary to delay the decision to divide with a second home visit being required. There are also occasions when a repeat procedure is needed, although this is not common. Each subsequent home visit does incur a charge as outlined on my 'Fees' page.
